Shopian, 26 April: Imtiyaz Memorial Government Degree College Shopian organized a special lecture on the “Importance of Millets” to commemorate the International Year of Millets-2023. The lecture was organized by the NCC wing of the college at the Conference Hall of the Science Block on 26th April 2023.
The lecture was attended by NCC Cadets and faculty members of the college. The keynote speaker for the event was Prof. Mehmood Ahmad Tak from the Department of Botany, while a technical lecture was delivered by Dr. Gulzar Ahmad Nayik from Department of Food Science and Technology.
Prof Tak delivered an informative lecture on the general introduction of millets, which are a rich source of dietary fiber, protein, and other essential nutrients. He highlighted the fact that millets are an affordable and sustainable alternative to other grains.
He emphasized the need for promoting the cultivation and consumption of millets in India and around the world, as part of efforts to promote food security and sustainability.
Dr. Gulzar Ahmad Nayik touched upon the environmental benefits of growing millets, as they require less water and fertilizer than other crops, and can be grown in a variety of soil conditions. Dr. Nayik highlighted the health benefits and valued added products prepared from millets.
The event was well received by the attendees, who appreciated the insights and information shared by Resource persons. The NCC wing of Imtiyaz Memorial Government Degree College was commended for organizing such an informative and relevant event, which has helped to raise awareness about the importance of millets in the context of the International Year of Millets-2023.
