Shopian: On the eve of ‘World Earth Day’ on 22nd April 2022, Imtiyaz Memorial Govt. Degree College Shopian Organized a One Day Seminar on the theme “Geological Significance of Kashmir Valley” in collaboration with Vigyan Prasar New Delhi, Central University of Kashmir and the Kashmir University.
The programme was attended by staff and students of the college. The programme began with the speech of guest speaker, Dr. Riyaz Ahmad Mir (Senior Geologist, Geological Survey of India) who made a detailed presentation on the theme of the seminar. He stressed upon the student community to develop interest in studying the earth sciences.
The chief guest for the seminar, Dr. Irfan Aalam (Director, Arts Campus Central University of Kashmir) apprised the audience about the project ‘SCoPE’ (Science Communication Popularization and Extension in Urdu) and its utility.
He stressed that scientific knowledge should be reached to students through Urdu medium also. In this context, the chief guest released the scientific magazine “Tajasus” written in Urdu language. The guest of honour, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, Associate Professor Zoology GDC Shopian pinpointed the use of harmful items like polythene which pollute the environment and stressed on using the green energy.
In the concluding remarks, Prof. Tariq Hussain Mir, Vice Principal of the College summed up aptly the proceedings of the seminar. Prof. Tariq Hussain sensitized the audience to make use of eco-friendly practices in day to day life to save the earth from pollution, land degradation etc. The overall proceedings of the seminar were conducted by Dr. Showkat A. Ganaie, H.O.D Geography, GDC Shopian and together with Dr. Imtiyaz Ahmad Tantray, H.O.D Urdu of the college coordinated with the Vigyan Prasar and other collaborators of the programme.
