Imtiyaz Memorial Govt. Degree College Shopian Celebrated World Environment Day

Shopian: In continuation with celebrations of ‘World Environment Week – 2022’ conducted by Department of Environmental Science in collaboration with NSS Wing of the college under the aegis of Debates and Seminars Committee, a seminar was held today on 7th June, 2022 in the institution. The seminar began with the welcome address by Prof. Sayar Yaseen (H.O.D Environmental Science).
In his welcome address, he deliberated on the importance of World Environment Day and with its specific theme apart from welcoming the guests, faculty members and participants. The welcome address was followed by the inaugural address from worthy Principal of the College, Prof. Bashir Ahmad Dar.
The Principal in his speech threw light on different environmental concerns the society is facing at present particularly water pollution by improper dumping of domestic sewage and pollutants into the water bodies.
He assured full support of college to all participants and stakeholders in doing efforts aimed at protecting the water resources in particular and environment in general.
This inaugural address was followed by speech delivered by Prof. M. Y. Baba (H.O.D Botany) who quoted various day to day examples of how we have ruined our surroundings from recent the past.
The main motto of his talk was to sensitize students about the importance of environment.
Division Pollution Control Officer Shopian Firdous Ahmad Khan in his lecture highlighted various issues like biomass burning in autumn season which degrades the air quality.
He threw light on various possible litigation aspects through which pollution can be controlled. He advised the participants to avoid use of single use plastics and take pledge to save our nature.
Prof. Shahnawaz Ah. Khanday (Convener, Debates and Seminars Committee of college) in his concluding remarks talked about the role of positive attitude in shaping the environment better. He cited various examples of degradation of fragile ecosystems by processes like land use /land cover change, indiscriminate use of pesticides and fertilizers etc. He laid special emphasis on change in attitude towards environment so that the problems can be averted well in time.
The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Fouzia Ishaq and the technical support was provided by Dr. Aadil Hamid from Department of Environmental Science of the institution.
The entire seminar proceedings were moderated by Dr. Showkat Ah. Ganaie (H.O.D Geography). Dr. Showkat related the environmental problems with the excessive demands from human beings and the pivotal point of his speech was safeguarding the environment for the survival of human beings.
