Jammu and Kashmir Aug 16: MGNREGA supporting staff working in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have decided to observe a pen down strike for three days from 16th to 18th August 2018.
Talking to Kashmir Radar, President All Jammu and Kashmir MGNREGA employees association, Syed Jaffar said that “they have been working in the department of Rural Development since thirteen years and the promises and betrayals by previous ruling governments have ruined their carrier and nothing substantial was done in our favour”.
Referring to an order issued by the Secretary to goverment Ms Sheetal Nanda on 07.07.2018 regarding constitution of committee to examine long pending Human Resource Development issues in the department including job policy and other related issues of supporting staff engaged under MGNREGA which may require amending certain recruitment rules, Syed Jaffar expressed resentment over the deaf ear turned towards this order by the goverment.
It is pertinent to mention that MGNREGA supporting staff was engaged on contractual basis in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir to provide and generate employment guaranteed under the centrally proposed scheme.
Since its inception, the supporting staff is under a tremendous pressure to execute and generate mandated man days to meet the needs of the scheme.
In addition to MGNREGA, the staff has been used by the department to execute other schemes and programmes viz, PMAY, SBM, election duties, duties in emergency times and more importantly the said staff has been on the forefront during COVID-19 pandemic.
