After the unfortunate incident of a leopard attack that snatched an angel like daughter from her parents, social media users since then started sharing different undated videos showing leopards at different locations in Kashmir.
Our fact finding team tried to check the authenticity of some videos and found that one particular video was shared by hundreds of Facebook pages including some individual profiles.
I one such instance, a leopard is clearly visible in the video during night hours when some people are trying to record the video.
The same video was shared by different Facebook pages citing different locations.
Some had mentioned the location as Humhama while some had mentioned Chrare sharif.
Another video in which two leopards can be seen roaming in a lane was shared again with different locations but the metadata of the video suggested that the video was captured by a CCTV in 2020 in Humhama area.
Another video in which a lion was seen roaming in a human habitation, but the video was uploaded on YouTube in 2019 and the caption mentioned the location as an Indian city.
The same video was shared with a false caption that attributed the location of the video somewhere in Srinagar.
Such dangerous trends of spreading misinformation are taking internet users on a ride in Jammu and Kashmir.
While the wildlife department responsibly shared only the videos and pictures of only captured leopards since past week, but netizens are busy in spreading fear psychosis among masses.
The administration should send out a strong message to such rumor mongers and warn them of strict action for spreading fake news
