In a tragic incident reported from Uttar Pradesh, an employee of the UP power corporation burnt himself alive after his boss allegedly asked him to ‘send his wife for a night’ if he wanted a transfer. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Gokul Prasad. He worked as a lineman in the department.
Gokul allegedly set himself on fire by pouring diesel outside the junior engineer’s office. The incident took place in Lakhimpur Kheri district. The victim died at a hospital during treatment on Sunday.
Police have now booked the junior engineer Nagendra Kumar and a clerk in connection with the case. The two have also been suspended by the power department.
A video of the lineman has also gone viral in which he could be seen narrating the sequence of events that led him to take the drastic step. The video was shot after he set himself ablaze.
According to Gokul, he was harassed by the junior engineer and his associate. The victim claimed that he had approached the police but no action was taken on his complaint.
Meanwhile, Gokul’s wife also alleged that the two accused were harassing her husband for over three years.
“He went into depression and started taking medicines, but they did not relent. Gokul was transferred to Aliganj and was facing difficulty in commuting. So he asked for a transfer closer home. They told him, ‘get your wife to sleep with us and we will get you transferred’,” the report quoted Gokul’s wife as saying.
SP Lakhimpur, Sanjiv Suman said a case has been registered against the junior engineer under abetment to suicide charge. He said the deceased has alleged that he was harassed by the engineer who demanded money and made vulgar gestures when he asked for a transfer.
