Meet Saima Gulzar, A Young Enthusiastic Rugby Player From Srinagar

Saima Gulzar Bhat, a 19 year old girl, hailing from Dalgate area of district Srinagar is a young and enthusiastic national Rugby player having represented Jammu and Kashmir 2 times on national level, and more than twice on state level.

In addition to Rugby, Saima actively participates in other games, like volley ball and cricket and has participated in various district level tournaments.

“Even though I like various games but I am very much passionate about Rugby. I have been playing this game since two years and I want to represent my country and make my parents proud.” Said Saima, while talking to The Kashmir Radar.

“The story of participation in sports is all possible because of the support of my parents, they proudly pat on my back when I come back tired from a sporting ground. They want me to play, for myself and for them.” Said Saima.

“Rugby is looked upon as a game of boys but I have pledged to change the narrative and prove it to the world that women too can participate in this game. This game is too close to my heart and I am very serious about it.” Said Saima.

Talking about her mission, Saima believes in women empowerment, she wants to send out a message of “strength,”  she wants to be an inspiration and an icon for the women in Jammu and Kashmir.

Saima is dreaming to be an international Rugby player, she is craving to find a platform where she can work to empower women all across the globe.

Saima considers Polo Ground in Srinagar as her another home, as this is the place where she has started her sporting career.
