Shariya Manzoor Becomes The First Kashmiri Woman Boxer To Fight ‘Senior Nationals’

Continuing her efforts to represent Jammu and Kashmir at the national level, Shariya Manzoor, a young female boxer becomes the first kashmiri boxer to fight senior nationals held in Bhopal.

Shariya made it to the pre quarter finals and had to compete with a national level boxer, an Asian and World Champion holder who is a gold medalist and a well decorated boxer.

Though Shariya didn’t win any rounds in the ring, her bravery and techniques left everyone suprised in the arena.

Shariya during her fight in the ring was praised by the commentators for her unusual presence on a platform where world’s best boxers compete.

Despite competing in a tougher competition, Shariya was also praised by the spectators for wearing hijab during the fight.

Shariya Manzoor, a 20 year old star boxer comes from a small village of Pulwama district and is also pursuing her graduation from the Goverment Degree College Pulwama.

“We lack facilities back home, I could have done better and this is what everyone here believed. The only thing we get to practice in Kashmir is a ring which too is not up to the mark, we are supposed to buy the items used in boxing out of our own pockets.” Said Shariya While Talking to The Kashmir Radar.

Shariya believes that she can bring laurels to her country if she is supported by the sports department and the sports fraternity in the Jammu and Kashmir.

Having represented Jammu and Kashmir several times, Shariya has won several Gold and Silver medals.

“She is a promising boxer, I can sense that spark in her. Despite being a quick learner, she needs help both technically and financially. I belive one day she will represent the country and will be a known figure in the world of sports.” Said Farooq Ahmad, Shariya’s coach.

Shariya Manzoor has won six medals at the national level, which include a medal at the Federation Cup and another one from the Youth All India National Championship 2021.

She has also won medals in the national Thang Soo Doo championship.

On 13 September 2021, she was felicitated with the “Kashmir Young Leadership Award” by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha during the Kashmir Leadership Summit at SKICC Srinagar.
