The Dargah Hazratbal, also known as the Hazratbal Mosque, is a magnificent monument and a sacred site for Muslims in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The Arrival of the Moi-e-Muqaddas:
The heart of the shrine lies in the Moi-e-Muqaddas, believed to be strands of hair from the beard of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The relic’s journey to Kashmir began in the 17th century when Syed Abdullah Madani, a purported descendant of the Prophet, brought it from Medina to Bijapur in South India. After his demise, his son Syed Hameed inherited the precious possession. However, political turmoil led to the family losing their estates, forcing Syed Hameed to sell the relic to a Kashmiri businessman, Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai.
Mughal Intervention and the First Shrine:
The relic’s fame reached the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who confiscated it and sent it to the Ajmer Dargah. Realizing his mistake later, Aurangzeb returned the Moi-e-Muqaddas to Khwaja Eshai with an escort. In 1700, Eshai’s daughter, Inayat Begum, built the first shrine on the shores of Dal Lake to house the holy relic. This initial structure, though modest, laid the foundation for the future grandeur of the Dargah.
Transformations and the Present Mosque:
The present-day marble edifice, a blend of Kashmiri and Mughal architectural styles, is a relatively recent addition. In 1968, the Muslim Auqaf Trust undertook the construction of the new mosque, which took 11 years to complete. The domed structure, standing gracefully on the edge of the lake, became a prominent landmark in Srinagar.
Significance and Rituals:
The Dargah Hazratbal holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims. The Moi-e-Muqaddas is kept inside a silver casket within the sanctum sanctorum and displayed only on special occasions like Eid Milad-un-Nabi and Shab-e-Meraj. Witnessing the relic is considered a blessed experience, attracting thousands of devotees throughout the year.
